Reality Is What You Make It: Collection Management in Two Vermont Academics
Ben Johnson & Laura Crain

This session focuses on collection development from the differing vantage points of the presenters: on the front lines of delivering library services in a heavily experiential college learning environment and from the collection management/tech services division of a liberal arts college. Laura examines evidence-based content decisions: analyzing usage statistics, allocation formulas that shift a significant portion of book purchasing toward high circulation subject areas, decisions tied to cost-per-use, new subscriptions based on evidence of “expected use”. Ben discusses what can rationally be accomplished with a small staff, and presents provocative questions and propositions intended to elicit responses and discussion from attendees. Does collection development consist of more or less successful attempts to replicate the experience of having an unlimited Amazon gift card for every user?

Organizational Culture
Lawrence Webster - Webster Consulting Services

Do you have a sticky problem in your library; one that just won't go away? Repeated internal communications issues? Problems with community support? Some of these common difficulties can be overcome by using the concepts of organizational culture to examine your library: What are the underlying values and attitudes that inform workplace atmosphere and customer service? What are the unwritten rules, customs, beliefs, and expectations? How do you acculturate new employees? Deal with rebels? Recognize culture clashes? Can a "culture" be changed? How?
This interactive workshop will introduce concepts to give library staff new ways of understanding problems -- and solving them. There will be a brief presentation and time for questions and discussion. The workshop is designed to be useful to public and academic libraries of all sizes.
